Research & Prototyping: Scanning and Monitoring Systems

For much of our service work, we use laser scanners to provide analysis on a range of problems. Over the years, we found that laser scanners are too expensive, too heavy, too fragile. An imaging technology that was previously only experimental, structured light technology was looked at with faster computer capabilities. The BEAR team developed the HoloScanner (see Photo) which is inexpensive, light weight, durable while at the same time providing accurate three dimensional images, with the advantage of yielding true color.

This machine is used in applications such as forensics to document crime scenes and accidents; it is also used by museums to document important works of art. The HoloScanner is a good tool for archeological sites. Furthermore, the systems is used in manufacturing quality control, for prototyping and mold making.
